There are a number of drugs that are known to lengthen the QT interval and should be avoided by people with LQTS. I have included a list of these drugs below. This list was obtained from the SADS Foundation. Even if a drug is not on this list, consult your cardiologist before taking anything over the counter or by prescription. Some drugs not on this list may also create problems. Anesthetics: Adrenaline Antihistamines: Seldane, Hismanol, Benadryl Antibiotics: Erythromycin Family*, Bactrim, Septra, Pentam intravenous Heart Medications: Quinidine Family, Pronestyl, Norpace, Betapace, Lorelco, Vascor Gastrointestinal: Propulsid* Antifungal Drugs: Nizorol, Diflucin, Sporanox Psychotropic Drugs: Elavil, Norpramine, Viractil (Tricyclics), Compazine, Stelazine, Thorazine, Mellaril, Etrafon, Trilafon, and others (Phenothiazine derivates), Haldol, Risperdal, ORAP Diuretics: Lozol *I almost died because of these two drugs. Also, electrolyte abnormalities such as low potassium or magnesium can lengthen the QT interval. Three times my arrythmias have been caused by low potassium. Also, when potassium is injected directly into the vein, it can also stop the heart. For a list of the chemical names and uses for these drugs go to: www.sads.org and click on "drugs to avoid"
