"The Fight for My Life"

When I was a kid, I was extremely capable of entertaining myself.  I would shut myself in my room for hours and play with my legos, make plaster of paris molds, paint, draw, make magazines for my younger sister, make cards for my family members, and write children's stories.  It was not unusual to walk into my bedroom and find piles of construction paper scraps, glue, yarn, crayons, markers, and me somewhere piled under it all.  I used to have a poster hanging up in my room that said "I'm not messy, I'm creative!"

I used to think I wanted to be an author of children's books.  Roald Dahl was my favorite author, particularly his book The BFG.  I read every book he wrote, most of them many times.  As I grew older, I discovered that I love to draw.  I decided in high school to become an animator.  I would sit in my classes and doodle cartoon characters everywhere.  At one point, I had a strong desire to create Hallmark cards.

Once I began college, my interest turned more towards illustrating children's books.  I have never lost my love of them.  Although this was my goal for a long time while in college, I felt that my real desire was to work with terminally ill children and help them cope with their problems.  This is when I decided to go into art therapy.  It was not a difficult decision.  I love kids, and I know this is where my heart is.  I still have a strong desire to be an illustrator, and may pursue it as a side career in the future.

I graduated from Messiah College in 2000 with a B.A. in studio art, including a double concentration in drawing and graphic design.  While at Messiah, I learned how to use all kinds of media to create artwork.  I used everything from oil paints and charcoal, to a water hose for a lamp!  I loved developing my creativity and skills in this area.  In spite of my use of more advanced materials than crayons in most instances, it is not uncommon for me to still sit down with my construction paper and Elmer's glue and make big construction paper objects.  I still have a "creative" room to this day.
